ABSTRACT
The need to develop infrastructure which is more sustainable is an immediate and growing challenge for the civil engineering profession. The requirement for sustainable development, coupled with the need to recycle waste and improve energy efficiency, has led to a requirement to develop new materials for use in construction which minimise the use of energy, preserve virgin materials and which are economically viable.
