The paper starts with a review of some key ideas of compaction. The purpose is to add a different fundamental perspective to the powerful and well established concepts of soil compaction. Compacted soils and rockfill are often combined in earth dam design. They exhibit qualitatively similar behaviour against water action. However, basic principles of deformation are substantially different. Both types of materials will be dealt with in this paper.
