ABSTRACT
The theme of this international conference celebrating the 60th birthday of Prof. J. Michael Rotter is ‘‘from scientific principles to engineering applications’’ in the fields of structures and granular solids. Certainly Prof. Rotter has, throughout his career, pushed the bounds of science in both structural engineering and granular solids. His approach, however, has not been limited to development of theories and mathematical concepts. Indeed he has always been mindful of practical applications of theory and experiment.
