ABSTRACT
Sustainable development is a national and international government objective to balance the need for economic development against the protection of the environment and the conservation of resources for future generations. In line with these objectives the UK Government Policy is to promote sustainable development and as a consequence sustainable development is included in Highways Agency mission statements. Sustainable development is a nebulous task and it is recognised that overriding principles and technical specifics must be balanced.
