Design of reinforced soil structures using fine grained fill types

Many studies have focused on the use of fine grained, cohesive fills in the construction of reinforced soil structures. The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) investigated the use of cohesive soil in a soil wall with various forms of impermeable reinforcement such as plastic and steel strips. The wall itself consisted of upper and lower layer of sandy clay with a middle layer of granular fill. Its early performance was described by Murray and Boden (1979). High excess pore water pressures developed in the clay during construction, resulting in large deformations occurring.
