ABSTRACT

For our purposes we define chromatography as a group of transient multicomponent separations resulting from differential rates of solute travel through a fixed sorbent bed via the flow of a percolating solvent. It is assumed here that the classification of chromatography is discussed elsewhere in this volume, and our emphasis is on the design and operation of chromatographic devices. The development of chromatography as a unified subject has been recently reviewed [1, 2].
