ABSTRACT

In recent years, rapid progress has been made on rare-earth-doped fiber lasers because of their simplicity and wide range of oscillation wavelengths. The generation of short optical pulses from l.55 µm erbium-doped fiber lasers is particularly attractive for highspeed optical communication, because the source can generate transform-limited picosecond to subpicosecond pulses and the oscillation wavelength in the 1.5 µm region corre-sponds to the minimum loss region of silica-based optical fibers.
