ABSTRACT

Food and kindred products may be classified according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) “Standard Industrial Classification Manual” (SIC Manual). This manual is revised periodically by supplements. Since the introduction of the Internet, the use of this manual has increased tremendously. In this manual, food and kindred products are placed under major group 20. This major group includes establishments manufacturing or processing foods and beverages for human consumption and certain related products, such as manufactured ice, chewing gum, vegetable and animal fats and oils, and prepared feeds for animals and fowls. Table 1 describes the industrial establishments according to categories of food and kindred products, and the group number for each category is also given. Table 2 describes food establishment categories, operations, and product examples.
