ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we will focus on the common cold, an upper airway tract infection mainly caused by rhinovirus (RV), the clinical manifestations of this infection, and its complications in the airways: acute sinusitis, acute otitis media, and exacerbations of asthma. Acute sinusitis is prevalent in both children and adults, and acute otitis media is the most frequent bacterial disease in childhood. In patients with asthma, a common cold can have serious consequences and result in considerable morbidity and in increased mortality.
