Respiratory tract infections are the most common cause of acute physical illness in the developed world. Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) constitute the bulk of the morbidity (Fig. 1). In the United States the rate of outpatient visits for URTI has been estimated as 200:100,000 of the population per year (3).
