ABSTRACT

Psychodermatology involves the many different types of conditions that lie between the fields of psychiatry and dermatology. These conditions range from patients who experience exacerbation of a real skin disease with emotional stress to those who are devastated emotionally by the disfigurement of their skin disease and those with serious underlying psychopathologies who self-inflict skin lesions. Psychodermatology is a discipline that strives to encourage a more comprehensive and humanistic approach to the management of dermatology patients with psychological overlays to their chief complaint. An international group of dermatologists and psychiatrists who have an interest in the field of psychodermatology has developed a concensus statement on the care and management of

psychodermatological disorders. The hope is that this consensus statement will promote the delivery of quality care for these patients and assist those outside our profession in understanding the complexities and scope of care provided by dermatologists.
