ABSTRACT

For current turbomachinery design, and in particular for aero engine applications, a primary emphasis is being placed on improved engine performance. Perhaps the most farreaching example of this is the Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET) Program, sponsored by NASA and DOD [1]. The goal of IHPTET is to achieve a twofold increase in performance, for advanced military turbine engines, by the beginning of the 21st century. Depending on the application, this performance increase will be achieved in a variety of ways, including increased thrust-to-weight, increased power-to-weight, and reduced specific fuel consumption (SFC).
