ABSTRACT
The previous two chapters have shown the importance of the nonlinear coefficient deff (or dij) for determining frequency conversion efficiencies as well as gain and thresholds for optical parametric devices. Another key optical parameter is the index of refraction, since the nonlinear optical figure of merit is actually d2/n3 ’ but more importantly the refractive index plays the pivotal role in determining phase matching for efficient frequency conversion.
