ABSTRACT

The POU-domain genes encode for a family of transcription factors that regulate a multitude of processes and are expressed in all organ systems. This family consists of 15 known mammalian genes that are subgrouped into six families. The extensive research following their identification has created a vast body of knowledge concerning their structure, function, regulation, and interactions. A number of excellent reviews focus on different aspects of this gene family, including their role in embryonic development (1), in the neuroendocrine system (2), and in the nervous system (3).
