ABSTRACT

With all these mathematicians (most of whom were in their prime) available to us, why did Goldstein, Gretsky and I choose to work under M.M.? I believe the reason was the sheer passion with which M.M. taught his courses. I'll never forget the M.M.'s closing lecture on the Bochner and Pettis integrals. Looking directly in our eyes, he said, "And now you know more about the Bochner and Pettis integrals than anyone in the department." Then he made a dramatic exit. This lecture must have grabbed me in a big way because I spent the next thirty years on research matters centering around the Bochner and Pettis integrals.
