ABSTRACT

Ultrasound evaluation of the fetal face is an extremely important part of the structural survey, since a detailed facial examination can provide much information alerting us to the possibility of associated anomalies at other levels of the fetal anatomy. It is well known that some facial and encephalic structures share the same embryologic origin, and for this reason any malformation detected at the facial level must necessitate a corresponding study at encephalic level. 1 We all recognize, with De Meyer et al, 2 that ‘The face predicts the brain’.
