ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: While urban groundwater in India is often highly polluted, it remains a valuable resource. The municipal piped water supply in most major and mid-sized cities is far from satisfactory and people have to use and treat groundwater for domestic and industrial purposes with proper precautions. Large, extensive urban areas are an integral part of the hydrologic basin and affect the quality and quantity of both surface water and groundwater. City planners are becoming increasingly aware of their responsibility for efficient management of water resources in river basins and are now managing the demand for water through water conservation, recirculation and reuse. Another strategy being tested by city planners is the artificial recharge of urban aquifers.
