ABSTRACT

The subterranean environment in urban areas is heavily exploited due to increasing traffic and the intensive and heterogeneous use of urban land. This leads developers to resort to underground alternatives for an increasing number of road networks and other infrastructure such as subways, tunnels, and water pipes. These often penetrate deep into aquifers and permanently modify the groundwater flow, sometimes acting as underground dams.
