ABSTRACT

Library of Congress Subject Headings LCSH26 (2003), (26th edn, 5 vols), Washington, DC: Library of Congress, Cataloging Distribution Service. End papers in each volume list the abbreviated aids for broader and narrower terms. Produced from records in the MARC21 subject authorities format, the headings help in constructing the right terms to use in searches. Words in bold letters are real headings, while lighter ones are cross-references. Broader and narrower terms, those that are used for another word and appropriate subdivisions are also included. All

are similar to the “see and see also” references formerly found in library card catalogs. About 36 percent of the headings are followed by Library of Congress class numbers. The explanations found within a heading are helpful. For example, the heading: “Engineering – graphic methods” (TA337) starts with “Here are entered works on the use of scales, graph papers,” and finishes with “as opposed to Engineering graphics” which is a broader term. Updates are found online in Library of Congress Subject Headings Weekly Lists. New headings and changes are at the Library of Congress Cataloging Policy and Support Office website <https://www.loc.gov/ catdir/cpso/> (accessed May 18, 2005).
