ABSTRACT

Submarine freshwater springs or vruljas are karst phenomena developed by geomorphological processes under the influence of recent sea-level changes (Fritz 1992). They are rather common features along the eastern Adriatic Sea coast and the most remarkable ones are located in the areas where intensively karstified mountain ranges (Mt Velebit, Mt Biokovo) rise directly from the sea, canalising groundwater from the hinterland (Suric 2002). The total number of vruljas in the Adriatic Sea is unknown (Kuhta & Novosel 2000).
