ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the effect of urban development on groundwater in shallow porous aquifers in Mediterranean climates is described. The main characteristics of this environment include: • A Mediterranean type of climate with hot, dry summers and mild to cold wet winters. • Unconfined shallow porous aquifers. • Aquifer recharge mainly from precipitation occurring in winter. • High vulnerability of the shallow aquifers to pollution.
