ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the problems of applying the various principles to microbial quality assurance of two specific groups of products, namely powder, tablet and capsule formulations, and hair and skin products. It also discusses toxic side effects that associated with chemical preservatives and it is important to consider carefully the possibilities of 'self-preservation or natural preservation' of products. The book talks about the problems that associated with control of microbial contamination in powders, tablets and capsules. It explains the problems can also arise from partitioning of the preservative into packaging materials. The book describes the various alternative approaches to preservative testing of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and toiletries. It also describes new methodology for preservative testing, as well as the traditional and more recent rapid methods used in microbiological quality assurance testing of these products.
