ABSTRACT

It is the FSA’s duty, firstly, to monitor and survey the nutrient content of food items and of the nation’s diet as a whole, but its remit is also to provide advice on nutrition, both to consumers and to the rest of Government. In addition, we propose new legislation, represent the UK in international negotiations, formulate policy and provide advice to other government departments and commission research. The FSA is, in fact, the biggest sponsor of nutrition research, currently spending some £7 million annually in this area. There is, however, room for improvement in the way we disseminate the findings of that research and translate it into policy.
