ABSTRACT

As a general practitioner, I shall be considering in this paper how obesity relates to primary care. I will also touch on why I became enthusiastic about managing it, and why I think that others in primary care should be enthusiastic too. I want also to talk about my feelings of pride and my feelings about prejudice. I am proud about the way primary care deals with so many problems in the face of limited resources and increasing workload, but I also want to talk about the prejudice seen in primary care towards the obese, the same prejudice that one finds throughout society towards the obese. I have become convinced, over recent years, that obesity is a major threat to the health of our nation. Rather than talk about the global epidemic, however, I want to show you what it means for the individual patient.
