ABSTRACT

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a type of congenital vascular malformation (CVM) that has direct communications between arteries and veins. The goal of AVM treatment is complete obliteration or removal of the AVM nidus without complication or recurrence. Treatment of AVM has been endovascular or multimodality therapy with endovascular treatment preferred in current practice. AVM treatment is often associated with complications, recurrence, or progression of the AVM lesions. To avoid complications or poor results after AVM treatment, it is recommended to consider the risks and benefits before AVM treatment, which is based on the patient's age and the anatomical location of the AVM, the clinical stage, and the angiographic type of AVM lesion.
