ABSTRACT

As the field of high entropy alloys enters its teenage years, a proper thrust in synergism with directions for future research is essential to ensure their commercialization with their eventual application in engineering components and structures. In the absence of proper direction, these exotic alloys can merely end up being of scientific curiosity with little to no commercial success. This field will be alive, active, and continue to attract attention only if a few alloys having commercial success can be engineered and put forth for practical use. It is often the dream of any alloy designer to see his compositions are effective and can be easily produced for purpose of selection and use. In this article, an attempt is made to identify, present, and discuss the challenges that arise during industrial processing of these alloys. Structural materials presently being used for various applications and their mechanical properties have been presented for high entropy alloy designers to focus and compare their achievements with conventional counterparts. The reported mechanical properties of high entropy alloys have also been consolidated and presented. Based on the results reported so far, it is suggested to identify and focus on functional materials that can have decisive advantages over conventional materials for commercialization than large-scale structural materials where concerns on ease of manufacture, cost, and recyclability outweigh the advantages, if any.
