ABSTRACT

The amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been steadily growing globally due to the rapid increase in population and urbanization. Major challenges associated with the MSW are the proper waste collection, segregation, and further disposal problems. In spite, improper MSW management and unscientific waste disposal lead to serious environmental hazards that directly affect public health in the developing world. Thus, it seems that MSW management one of the key area in present as well as in future for environmental conservation. The waste management is the common responsibility of citizens, municipal committees, planners, and decision-makers who are sensitive toward environmental pollution. In present scenario, increasing environmental awareness has a significant impact on disposal and effective waste management. The present chapter focuses on the detailed review of the waste generation, composition, and recent waste management techniques.
