A good review of entomology-based methods for estimation of post-mortem interval is a paper of the same name. In this chapter, the authors give a brief overview and comparison of existing methods to estimate the post-mortem interval, namely isomorphen and isomegalan diagrams, thermal summation models, curvilinear models and spectral measurement. It is possible that the longer durations estimated from the three techniques were due to inaccuracies in scene temperature estimation as temperatures were based on the nearest weather station, which was 10 km from the scene. The authors also present some more recent developments that show some promise in improving the accuracy of the estimation, as well as providing a more rigorous way to evaluate the uncertainty and some model diagnostics.
