Inappropriate activation of trypsinogen in the pancreas leads to the development of pancreatitis. Once activated, trypsin is capable of activating many other digestive proenzymes in the pancreas and enhances autodigestion of the pancreas. Trypsin also activates cells via trypsin receptor, which has recently become known as one of the protease activated receptors, namely PAR-2. Both acinar and duct cells express abundant PAR-2.
