The development of a complicated tissue, such as the pancreas, which consists of a mixture of various types of exocrine and endocrine cells, requires a meticulously planned and engineered assembly line during embryogenesis and organogenesis. An error in any stage of the assembly line can cause an immediate malfunction after birth or render the organ susceptible to toxicological insults during the life. Hence, the injury to the pancreas can start at its inception.
