ABSTRACT

The World Health Organisation identified risks in the health care system in the form of adverse events as a major risk to world health alongside malnutrition, tobacco and alcohol consumption, high blood pressure and unsafe sex etc [1]. There is a growing understanding that as well as substantial benefits; health care practices may be a source of disease and death. The World Health Organisation passed Resolution 55.18 in 2002 that recognised the need to promote patient safety as a fundamental principle of all health care systems [2]. The resolution also urged all Member States to pay the closest possible attention to the problem of patient safety and to establish and strengthen science-based systems, necessary for improving patients’ safety and the quality of healthcare, including the monitoring of drugs, medical equipment and technology.
