ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces GIS to the level of intra-site analysis and discusses the role of GIS within the context of settlement excavations. It presents the results of an intra-site analysis based on the data from two excavations in the Assendelver Polders in the west of The Netherlands. Combinations of a large number of finds, features, indices of finds and indices of find dimensions can only be achieved by a GIS in which the raster component is fully integrated with the vector part of the program, and which easily combines and dissects features, attributes and phases. The visualization of several components at a location can give a better insight into what is going on there and large quantities of information can be shown in one image. A GIS can combine the information from tables, graphs, together with the descriptions of finds and features within a spatial framework.
