ABSTRACT

The specific field of archaeological interest in the development of the GIS method for non-systematic survey data is the study of the relationship between town and country in the Mediterranean region during Roman times (from the Late Republic to the early Middle Ages). It was decided to use low-cost GIS software, as the economic factor always has a major role in deciding which equipment to use in archaeological research. The IDRISI GIS package was chosen, as it does not have special requirements for disk space or memory. It is important to be aware of these problems before any analysis is attempted on the data sets, especially when the different data sets are going to be compared. This information can then be directly exported to the Idrisi package for use in the GIS study. As IDRISI requires that all the elements are referenced to the same coordinate system, it is impossible to use these data directly.
