ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the possibility of tracing the distribution and movements of, as well as interactions between archaeological cultures. It presents three themes within an ongoing project of the research team for computer applications in archaeology at the Archaeological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Similar to some other regional evaluations our aim was to integrate regional site survey data with site excavation data. Ancient geomorphological conditions and palaeohydrological formations of decisive importance were studied using aerial photography, field walking, geophysical prospecting and core drilling in the Koros river region of southeast Hungary, Great Hungarian Plain. In 1990-1991, large scale excavations were carried out at the multi-period settlement of Menfocsanak-Szeles in the vicinity of Gyor. Finally, all the excavations of an Iron Age settlement site in Sopron, the accumulation process producing a hut's fill was modelled on the basis of the find material deposited in it.
