ABSTRACT

The most challenging issues facing medical and paramedical professionals’ focuses on the accurate identification of the concussion and once identified, the care and management of the patient and his/her return to participation. The best programs integrate the planning and implementation of injury prevention procedures that have included support from the program sponsors, the medical supervisors, the coaches, the community and the participants. An injury prevention program for concussions follows the same strategy as a prevention program for any other injury. The head injury forces that may act on the brain during a practice or game session can originate and be associated with a variety of different scenarios. Injury prevention, regardless of the type of injuries or type of activity includes two separate levels of concern. The pre-participation section of injury prevention emphasizes things that are done ahead of time to minimize the number of concussions.
