ABSTRACT

This paper attempts to present an excerpt of a comprehensive archaeobotanical report that is part of a conscious effort to establish a workable archaeobotanical reference for Island Southeast Asia. The site of Leang Burung 1 is located in the Maros region, about 25 km north of Makassar in southwest Sulawesi. The environmental samples from Leang Burung 1 had been stored in Australia for almost three decades. The Leang Burung 1 samples were processed and analysed at the George Pitt-Rivers Laboratory, University of Cambridge. Identification of archaeobotanical materials in Island Southeast Asia is not common, let alone the determination of charred remains to plant type or plant part. The non-seed elements in the sample fall into three categories: wood; endocarp/fruit remains and parenchyma tissues; and, possibly vegetative root/stem organs. All plant remains in the environmental samples were charred or semi-charred; only one looked mineralised.
