ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a definition of stress and introduces the emerging role of molecular biology for state-of-the-art research. It describes stress triggers and outlines some of the assessment techniques. The chapter highlights stress reduction techniques that each individual can use to help him or herself. Stress is a cumulative by-product of rapid social change and individual life circumstances. Major social changes occur with patients in chronic pain. Stress plays a major role in chronic pain problems. Assessing stress can start with self-awareness by an individual. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between the magnitude of the life change score and the onset of illness. Holistic approaches will allow the patient and the clinician to become partners in the prevention and treatment of stress disorders. Treatment needs to emphasize early recognition rather than waiting for the disease process to worsen and become more debilitating. Treatment requires a blend of both traditional medicine and holistic behavioral modalities.
