ABSTRACT

Carambolas, Averrhoa carambola L., were introduced into Florida from south-east Asia in the 1800s, but have only become commercially important. Hurricane Andrew caused a drop in production in 1992 but many new orchards have been planted and old ones are recovering. The Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa, is present throughout southern Florida and was introduced from some source in the Caribbean in the mid-1960s. The cold treatment for carambolas has been under consideration for shipping to Japan, but the question of which stage of the insect is most resistant to cold was raised. Probit analysis was performed on the data using SAS, and normal, logit and Gompertz distributions were fitted to the data. The normal distribution gave better goodness of fit than either logit or Gompertz distribution did for the data.
