ABSTRACT

Transverse mechanical properties of CFRP laminates have been studied by use of our proposed method and its validity first obtaining the static transverse shear modulus and strain has been able to confirm in our former paper (Byon, Tanimoto and Hashimoto 1997).

In this paper, the proposed method is applied to obtaining the impact transverse shear properties in CFRP laminate under impact load owing to a drop weight. Then, the curves of the impact transverse shear modulus and failure strain to the fiber orientation angle are obtained as same as the static load. Both curves have a maximum at θ = 0° and decrease nonlinearly with increasing θ. They have an inflection point near 30 ° and the failure mode is expected to change from transverse shear failure to the flexural one at this angle. These experimental results are compared with ones obtained a 3D Finite Element Code.
