ABSTRACT

High definition multifold seismic reflection data provide an effective tool for detailed analysis of the internal facies or system tracts within stratigraphic sequences deposited. The interpretation of multifold exploration seismic reflections by the seismic stratigraphic method yields information primarily on 3rd order depositional sequences for ages greater than 3 million years and 4th order sequences for younger deposits associated with global cyclic fluctuations in sea level. The difference between the two types of data is strictly a function of the resolution of the techniques which are a function of source frequency and reflection data sampling rate. Sequence stratigraphic models provide a rational basis for the analysis of shallow seismic stratigraphic sequences. The principles of seismic stratigraphy developed during the 1970s by P. R. Vail and others have proven an invaluable tool toward the interpretation of marine stratigraphic sequences from seismic reflection data.
