ABSTRACT

66It is shown that by means of in vivo 1H-NMR spectroscopy at a field strength of 7 T about 10 metabolites at a millimolar level can be quantified in the rat cerebral cortex. This technique was used to monitor the levels of lactate, glutamine, glutamate, N-acetylaspartate, phosphocreatine/creatine, and choline compounds in two rat models of hyperammonemia. Concentration changes of the measured compounds were discussed in relation to the brain ammonia concentration and the degree of hepatic encephalopathy.
