ABSTRACT

A common problem everyone faces and tries to solve at some time or other is that of recalling someone’s name. We know the person, talked to her only a few days ago, but now, in conversing with someone else, cannot say her name. This problem differs in no special way from any of those instances where we are attempting to state what we already know but at the moment cannot emit the proper response. We encounter such problems daily. Then, of course, there are those problems thrust upon us in test situations, all based on our having the proper prerequisite repertoire to solve them. We are instructed in calculus and, using what we know of that subject, are expected to solve problems presented to us. Another set of problems we initiate for ourselves is that posed by games. Games present problems; in fact, that accounts for most of the reason for their success. For example, millions of people spend hours playing chess. It requires a set of prerequisite skills: Necessary behaviors to make an effective response must be in place, and this repertoire makes it possible for the player to emit the proper response to any situation the game presents.
