ABSTRACT

Researchers indicate that, in problem-solving/programming language studies, research design problems may contribute to the lack of support for the speculated link between learning programming languages and problem-solving skills (e.g., Burton & Magliaro, this issue). Such factors include length of treatment (developing problem-solving skills takes time and, thus, the treatment may not be long enough), type of treatment (whether a programming language is in fact taught), and dependent measures (whether they measure problem-solving skills).
