ABSTRACT

Diverse and complex mechanisms take part in the induction of an autoimmune condition. An appropriate genetic and hormonal setting, a concurrent infection or vaccination and many other environmental factors all converge in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity. Various processes take part in the induction of the autoimmune reaction such as antigenic spreading, antigenic mimicry, apoptosis, idiotypic network changes and many others. Some of these important factors have been pursued and targeted in order to generate modern nonhazardous therapeutic modalities that not only halt the progression of the autoimmune process but also reverse its affliction.
