ABSTRACT

SDGs are in competition and partnerships provide a way to manage and maximize resources for sustainable development, including working across multiple SDGs. The mining and minerals sector provides examples of the potential of global partnerships for sustainable development where mineral development occurs. A more recent trend is for partnerships to extend across supply chains, from mine to end user. Responsible minerals sourcing initiatives have engaged additional global partners in the supply chain and helped to scale up sustainability pressure and progress, including via new partnerships. These experiences position mining as an important pathway for achieving the SDG 17 indicator on enhancing the global partnership for sustainable development via multi-stakeholder partnerships in knowledge, expertise, technology, and financial resource sharing and mobilization, especially in developing countries. Needs for future progress in and evolution of partnerships mirrors needs for broader sustainable development efforts: increased efficiency and alignment, impact and accountability, equitable engagement, and financial sustainability. Ultimately, success in achieving SDG 17 in the minerals sector will support all the SDGs and inform progress across other sectors.
