ABSTRACT
Switching electric currents in high-voltage circuits involves mechanically separating two contacts to form an electric arc plasma which is then quenched. This operation is conducted in a tank containing a vacuum or one type of gas which has good arc-quenching properties. The quenching process may be enhanced by blowing the gas through the plasma or electromagnetically driving the arc through the gas.
