ABSTRACT

Polythiophenes (PT) have been exploited over the past several years due to their structural versatility and optical properties upon functionalization to the thiophene main chain (Jen et al., 1986; Sato et al., 1986). Its structure of C atoms may be compared as a modification of trans polyacetylene with a more complicated organization due to the bond with sulfur atom forming a ring, as shown in Figure 5.1. This modification becomes PT stable under atmospheric and thermal exposure, beyond the possibility of tuning crystallinity and solubility through functionalization (Springborg, 1992).
