ABSTRACT

Alcoholism is an obsession characterized by a lasting craving for alcohol. Unlike alcohol addicts, who drink too much but are not dependent on alcohol, alcoholics feel an obligation to drink overpoweringly. Despite its mental and societal sequelae, alcohol addiction is basically a mental ailment. Various medicinal plants and herbs such as Silybum marianum, Pueraria lobata, Taraxacum officinale, Ganoderma lucidum, Passiflora edulis, Artemisia absinthium, Hypericum perforatum, and Tabernanthe iboga including some other lesser known plants Ginseng and Cayenne pepper can be active either as a prime therapy or in combination with conservative remedies. Although various chemotherapies are available, the practice of herbs and plants for treating alcohol addiction has numerous benefits such as no side effects, no toxicity, natural, effective, and safe. The present review would focus on the health abuse of alcoholism and the role of herbs and medicinal plants (importance, medicinal value, benefits, and the mode of action) in handling the intoxication and drinking problem.
