ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the relevant existing works in HI System Architectures (HISA). The existing work in the area is classified by some identified parameters. After reviewing the works in the area of cloud-based HI, we have identified the building blocks of the cloud-based HIS. There are plenty of challenges in each of these domains, inviting the attention of researchers. Cloud Computing and Data Analytics brought a revolution in the healthcare sector in terms of the way that health data was being stored, shared and processed through HISs. Health informatics research involves data-intensive scientific application workflows. This workflow can run more efficiently on the cloud as it offers advantages of scalability and load balancing. According to the United States National Library of Medicine, Health Informatics is “the interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption and application of IT-based innovations in healthcare services delivery, management and planning”.
