ABSTRACT

Bioremediation of pollutants, specially the hydrocarbons, from soils and aquatic systems has attracted much attention in the past decades to achieve a green and clean environment. Normally, in the bio-remediation process native or adapted or potential microorganisms are used effectively to achieve the pollutants' elimination or reduction to acceptable limit. However, despite the slow process of bioremediation, it has economic and environmental advantages, since use of microbes does not cost much. Further, use of nanotechnology as self-assembly technique for enhancing the bioremediation process offers an efficient angle to this man made problem. In this chapter, a detailed discussion about advantage of using nanoparticles as bioremediation agents has been mentioned. Also, the direct and indirect roles of different nanoparticles in bio-remediation process enhancement has been mentioned. The simultaneous processes of nanoparticles preparation with bioremediation are also pointed out. Additionally, the methods for applying the nanoparticles in bioremediation process in the pilot scale are also discussed.
